of Instructor Presence.

The Art

Online teaching is often described in terms of tools, platforms, and content delivery, but effective instructor presence is far more human than technical. In online spaces, presence comes from small, intentional choices that help learners feel guided, supported, and connected (Wang, 2022).

This blog post explores practical ways instructors can make that presence visible through communication, feedback, course design, and interaction.

is not about being available at all times.

Instructor presence

It is about being visible

in the moments that matter most.

A strong online presence helps reduce uncertainty, build trust, and create a more engaging learning experience (Jain et al., 2023; Wang, 2022).

When learners know what to expect, receive timely support, and feel recognized as individuals, they are more likely to participate actively and persist in the course (Wang, 2022).

Timely, personal, and strengths-based feedback can make teaching presence visible while supporting learner motivation and self-regulation (Morrison & Jacobsen, 2023).

From Presence to Practice

01.

Technology and Instructor Presence

Technology can make instructor presence visible throughout an online course when it is used intentionally rather than simply added for variety. LMS announcements and messaging tools can provide regular communication, video can add voice and personality, collaborative tools can create opportunities for interaction, and clearly organized course pages can help learners navigate the experience with confidence.

A small, reliable set of tools can also make it easier for instructors to maintain a consistent presence without overwhelming learners or themselves.

02.

Additional considerations

Instructors also need to consider accessibility, consistency, learner support, and realistic communication boundaries. Students should be able to locate materials easily, understand when and how their instructor will respond, access content in appropriate formats, and know where to find support when they need it.

Maintaining instructor presence does not mean being constantly available. Instead, it requires clear expectations, predictable routines, and intentional points of connection that can be sustained throughout the course.

What I will take forward

One of the most important ideas I will carry forward is that instructor presence must be intentionally designed. Effective online instruction isn't about being visible every minute; it is about creating consistent moments when learners feel guided, acknowledged, and supported.

In my Course Project, I will include clearly stated response times, regular announcements, a welcoming instructor introduction, predictable course organization, and opportunities for personal interaction and feedback. These strategies will help me create an online learning environment that feels structured while still remaining human and approachable.

Good online teaching

is not about being louder.

It is about being clearer, kinder, and more intentional.
